In the UK the breed is classified by the Kennel club as a Vulnerable
Native Breed. Last year’s registrations were 60 Sussex Spaniels
only. The Parent Club for the Breed is the Sussex Spaniel
Association of about 200 members.
SSSI and SSA Members
Chris and Viv Wakefield are well known in the Breed in the UK. They
began showing Sussex in 1977, Their first Sussex to be made up was
Sh Ch Shipden Fleche bred by the Muirhead’s. They then went on to
produce 8 UK title holders under their kennel name Norriss. They
have also made up several European Champions. Their most famous dog
is Multi-Champion Zaphod of Tonispada (co-owned with John Fordham).
He was BOB at the Winner Show in Amsterdam 2008. They live in the
North of England in Yorkshire and are widely travelled in the dog
showing world.

Sheila & John Appleby have owned Sussex Spaniels since 1992. They
first concentrated on working their dogs in the Shooting field and
have also bred several litters over the years. They’ve had modest
success in the Show ring. They presently have 4 Sussex Spaniels,
including Quarr Spinning Jenny almost 13 years. Her sire was a
Norriss dog and she has been the best working dog they’ve owned.
Sheila and John are Kennel Club Accredited Breeders and Sheila is
also the UK SSA Secretary.
